If I haven’t said it before, I’m saying it now… I love Melanie Harlow and all she brings to her novels. It never fails, every time I finish reading one of her novels, I want more! I always want more, and there is no denying that fact. I’m a Michigan girl, not born, but raised my whole life and there’s a sense of nostalgic bliss when I read her books. It’s hard to describe the feeling. But it’s pure and true. Taste had my heart damn near ready to bust out of my chest!
Maybe it’s the Michigan in my, but I’m a sucker for the snowed in trope! There’s something about being stranded in forced proximity with the one you not only despise but also secretly want that has me running upstairs as fast as I can to grab my blanket and cuddling in for a night of reading.
Gianni is one of the top chefs in the world! He’s also known around the industry as Too Hot To Handle. This man is a force to be reckoned with, he has endless dreams and the charisma and charm that has people literally eating out of the palm of his hand. He has everything, but the one thing he truly wants isn’t even close to being within his reach.
Elle has known Gianni as the boy/man who lives to torment her. Since they were kids it’s been a constant battle between the two. Elle has dreams too, and she’s not about to let an arrogant man child ruin this one night that has the potential to make all of her dreams come true… Snow storm be damned, nothing is going to stand in her way!
After a disastrous night, Gianni and Elle are forced off the road by a huge blizzard that has swept it’s way through northern Michigan. And if they didn’t think the situation could get any worse… it does. There’s only one room vacant in the motel. A room with a single bed. I, honestly, had to hold my smile in through the entirety of the motel moments. Nothing good can come from three bottles of wine, gas station snacks, and an undeniable attraction that’s been simmering throughout Elle and Gianni’s lives.
And then when I thought I couldn’t be any happier with this novel, Melanie Harlow decided to throw us all a curveball and I didn’t see this curveball coming! Let’s just say, she throws in another one of my favorite tropes! I was in trope heaven with Gianni and Elle’s story!
Now onto why I gave Taste by Melanie Harlow a four star rating. So without spoiling you all I’ll say, I loved Gianni and Elle’s story from start to finish. I loved their back and forth banter and endless amount of chemistry. I loved their getting to know you period and I loved their determination when it comes to following their dreams and knowing what they want for their lives. What I couldn’t grasp my heart around was Elle’s determination to kick Gianni out of her life after all they discovered. I understand her insecurities given all she went through with Gianni through the course of their lives. However, I also understand this as what could have been an epic moment of togetherness between the two. What I’m trying to say is I needed a bit more from both Gianni and Elle in those few key moments of their relationship. Elle needed to see Gianni for the man he grew to be instead of the boy who used to love to tease her. Yet again, I can chalk this up to having spoiled reader syndrome.
If you love the ‘forced proximity/snowed in’ trope, I highly recommend you get your hands on this one today.
