Synopsis:

Nothing is fair in war.

Jonathan King is every bit his last name.
Powerful. Untouchable. Corrupted.
He’s also my dead sister’s husband and way older than me.
When I first met him as a clueless child, I thought he was a god.
Now, I have to confront that god to protect my business from his ruthless grip.
Little did I know that declaring a war on the king will cost me everything.
When Jonathan covets something, he doesn’t only win, he conquers.
Now, he has his sights on me.
He wants to consume not only my body, but also my heart and my soul.
I fight, but there’s no escaping the king in his kingdom…

Reign of a King is the first part of a duet and is not standalone. The entire duet is complete.

Reign of a king is the first, official, book in Rina Kent’s Kingdom Duet. This book is told from Jonathon King and Aurora Harper’s point of view.

Aurora’s life took a drastic turn one night and for that drastic turn, she decided to change her identity. One thing she learned through it all, the only person in life you can trust is yourself. And sometimes even that is debatable. Now, all Aurora wants to do is grow her business, and rubbing elbows with the wealthy is just the ticket her and her best friend need to flourish. So with a secured ticket to the wedding of the century (Aiden and Elsa’s) she makes her way through the crowd. The only thing she has to do is avoid Jonathon King at all costs. Yeah, like that will happen.

The moment Jonathon saw Aurora at his son’s wedding, he thought he had seen a ghost… She may look like his deceased wife, but he knows there’s something different between Aurora and the woman he was once married to. Aurora has a fire inside of her, and something deep inside her calls to something deep inside Jonathon. Moral of the story is, you can’t outrun fate. Fate will always fight back, with a vengeance! Once your names are written in the stars, there is no rewriting the history or the future.

My Thoughts:

It has to be said, if you are wanting to start the Kingdom duet, you don’t really have to read the prequel. The last three chapters of the prequel, Rule of a Kingdom, are the first three chapters in, Reign of a King. However, the first three chapters of Rule of a Kingdom give us a soft glimpse of Jonathon and Aiden, when Aiden was a tiny boy. This moment is sweet and endearing. So if that’s something you crave from Aiden and Jonathon, then I highly recommend you pick up Rule of a Kingdom and give the first three chapters a read.

Reign of a King really blew me away! In all honesty, I knew I was going to enjoy this one. I was intrigued by Jonathon’s character from the start of my Rina Kent reading. There was always a dark vibe surrounding him, and I knew once he found that one person to speak to his soul, that darkness would evolve into something a bit more sinister. So I was predicting I would enjoy this one, However, I didn’t think I would love it as much as I did!!

You see, Jonathan has a dark soul, due to the fact that it’s been tarnished. He has spent his life protecting his family, building a business, and making a name for his family. And sometimes that switch that was flipped on, isn’t so easy to turn off. Throughout Rina Kent’s world, she depicts Jonathon as being this man who is broody, cranky, stubborn, and cruel. Throughout this world there was one question that floated around in my head. That simply question being Why. What had happened to this man, to make him the way he is today. Some fingers point at his family and having to provide for them and show the public there is no weakness in the King family name. And some fingers pointed towards his deceased wife’s mental illness that led up to her tragic death. While most fingers point towards Ethan, his frenemy for better choice of words. I’ll say, it’s a heavy dose of all combined. I learned this man’s life has been a series of hit and runs. I never thought I would say this, but my heart kind of broke for him and all he had to endure in his life.

And then we have Aurora Harper. Aurora is the missing piece. She’s full of light, heat and passion. But she has also lived through a tragicly sinister life. I’m not going to dive into that part of the story because it’s picked up more in the last book of this duet. But throughout this novel, we learn that Aurora is on the run from her past. And she fears the future.

When Jonathon buys her company right out from under her nose, she knows her future is about to revolve around the man her body wants, but her head begs to stay away from…. I loved Aurora’s stubborn nature. Here is a woman who has been controlled her whole life, and is finally taking the horse by the reins. The deal is six months living in the same house, and after that six months is over, Jonathan will give her the company back…. But little does Aurora know, you can’t make a deal with the devil, and not come out unscathed.

I can’t begin to tell you all how much I loved Aurora in this novel! Jonathan thought it was going to be an easy deal. Little did he know, Aurora wasn’t about making things easy for him. The fire deep inside her started to roar to life once that deal was made. I loved her stubborn streak. No matter how hard Jonathon pushed, Aurora Pushed right back. The banter was endless, and I loved watching Aurora make this man sweat!! She brought out that protective instinct in him.

And let’s not forget the chemistry and the passion. It’s on every single page! The only thing I am thankful for, at this moment, is the fact that I just found this duet and I don’t have to wait for the second book! This cliffhanger surpasses all cliffhangers! I don’t even want to know how I would have felt if I had to wait a few months for the answers to all the questions floating around in my head….. UGH!

Overall, I am loving Jonathon and Aurora!! And in all honesty, I couldn’t help myself, I read Rise of a Queen before jumping into this review. That is how excited I was for more Jonathon and Aurora! I needed answers and I couldn’t wait for them. So bottom line, this is my favorite couple in Rina Kent’s world…. So far!!
